Moving to Houston? Set up internet before you arrive (checklist)
July 18, 2026
Moving to Houston — or across it — comes with a hundred tasks, and internet is the one people remember at 9pm on move-in night when nothing streams and tomorrow’s meetings loom. Here’s the checklist that makes internet the easiest box you tick.
Two weeks out: check the new address
Houston internet availability is decided at the exact address — not the city, not even the ZIP. The Heights bungalow you’re leaving and the Rice Military townhome you’re moving into can have completely different menus. Run the 30-second address check on the new place the day your lease or contract is signed. You’ll learn one of two things:
- Fiber serves the address → you can schedule the install for move-in week right now. Fiber install slots are the one part of this process worth booking early.
- Fiber hasn’t reached that block → a specialist can tell you what does serve the address, so you’re not guessing during moving week.
One week out: schedule around your move
If you booked a fiber install, aim for day one or two in the new place — an hour of a tech’s time while boxes are everywhere anyway beats a week of phone-hotspot life. And moving week is the easiest time to price your phone lines too — one call while everything’s changing anyway.
One thing NOT to do yet: don’t cancel the old address’s service until you’re actually out. Overlap costs a few dollars; a gap costs your sanity.
Move-in day: the 10-minute setup
- No fiber yet: you’ll already know the plan from the address check — and your phone’s hotspot bridges the first night if you need it.
- Fiber install day: know where you want the equipment (central to the home beats the far corner of the garage), and if the house is two stories, say the words “mesh Wi-Fi” — coverage placed right on day one saves months of dead-zone complaints.
The renter’s addendum
Renters in Montrose fourplexes or downtown towers: buildings sometimes constrain your options — older multifamily properties may need owner sign-off for a first fiber install, and some high-rises are wired to a single provider. The address check reveals this early, and your phone plan works regardless of what the building decided in 2009.
The whole checklist, in six lines
- ✅ Signed on the new place → run the address check the same day
- ✅ Fiber available → book install for move-in week
- ✅ No fiber yet → ask the specialist what does serve the address
- ✅ Keep old service until you’re out
- ✅ Day one: equipment central, mesh if two stories
- ✅ Actually enjoy the first night in your new Houston home — online
